Ernst von Leutsch Papers, ca. 1824-1885.

Papers of Ernst von Leutsch related to his academic studies as well as his own scholarly teaching in classical philology, from his time at Gymnasium to late in his career as a professor at the University of Göttingen. The collection includes bound volumes of lecture notes, and one notebook of miscellaneous notes, taken by Leutsch as a student at the University of Göttingen (15 vols.; Boxes 2 to 12, 40); one set of notes that he took at the University of Berlin, where he went to further his studies under August Boeckh (1 vol.; Box 1); and manuscript notes for lectures that he himself gave, at the University of Göttingen, spanning his career (circa 1831-1885; 17 manuscripts; Boxes 13 to 38). Also included are two volumes of notes he kept as a student at Gymnasium related to his study of Greek and Latin (2 vols.; Box 40); and copies of two of his published works, annotated by him with corrections and additional references (these include his Habilitation, or qualifying dissertation, Theses sexaginta; and two copies of his Grundriss zu Vorlesungen über die griechische Metrik). The bound volumes of notes taken by Leutsch at university are neatly written and well structured; the courses at Göttingen are from four professors, with the bulk of the notes relating to courses by Georg Ludolf Dissen and Karl Otfried Müller. Leutsch's unbound manuscript notes for his own lectures are typically written on individual gatherings of varied appearance, with additional leaves laid in, reflecting compilation over time. The intended order is often uncertain. Among his lectures are histories of both Greek and Latin literature, with outlines included. Some lectures include or are mostly comprised of detailed commentaries on specific works. The lecture notes presumably offer an important supplement to Leutsch's published oeuvre, since he is known to have placed a high value on teaching, and to have given widely ranging lectures remarkable for their depth and thoroughness. The notes for his course on Greek meter provide the rich narrative material underlying his published outline (Grundriss) on the same topic. Some of the manuscripts include introductions or opening remarks in which he conveys his attitudes toward and approaches to scholarly study.
